# LDC-E5101 — An edition pointing at a missing source ## What it means Every edition belongs to one declared source: the `of` reference says which work the edition reproduces. When that name matches no source in the package, the edition hangs unattached and the trace loses the work it came from. The compiler refuses the dangling reference. Declare the source, or correct the name after `of`. This error also rejects `entrenchment.source` when its local target is missing or is not a source work (§32.3). A dangling protection reference must not silently disable the E5301 consolidation check. ## Example ```law language "law.core" version "0.2"; package demo.diagnostics version "0.1.0"; namespace "urn:law:demo:diagnostics"; source S1 { kind statute; } edition E1 of Missing { language en; officiality official; } ``` ## Fix ```law language "law.core" version "0.2"; package demo.diagnostics version "0.1.0"; namespace "urn:law:demo:diagnostics"; source S1 { kind statute; } edition E1 of S1 { language en; officiality official; } ``` ## Engine message The engine reports this in its own wording: ```text example.law:6:15: error LDC-E5101: edition "E1": source "Missing" is not declared (§28) ``` ## Related - [Sources](/constructs/sources/) — how works, editions, and fragments are declared.
